Emergency landing on the beach of Iceland, 21 November 1973

This C117D/R4D-8 Skytrooper was on a routine flight over Iceland. Due to sudden drops in temperature to far below freezing, the carburetors froze and the engines stalled. As  result, an emergency landing had to be made on the black beach of Sόlheimasandur in South Iceland. Fortunately all occupants survived.

The remains of this aircraft are still in this place to this day and have become a tourist attraction. In the meantime, after 50 years, the wreck is no longer as beautiful as it is here in this painting.
